East Sac County Senior Awarded $2,000 Star Student Scholarship

Arcadia Iowa-Senior Maggie Gosch, East Sac County Community Schools, received the 2020 Star Student Scholarship of Iowa in recognition of her academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and educational goals.

In addition to being on Honor Roll, Maggie has enjoyed extra curricular activities throughout her high school career. She is a member of Future Farmers of America(East Sac FFA), and works as a Dietary Aide at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, IA part time.

Gosch plans to attend the Vet Tech Program at Iowa Lakes Community College upon graduating. She credits her academic success to her Special Education Teacher, Mr. Zehnder. He set goals for her, and encouraged her to achieve them. “At the beginning of High School, I never thought academically, that college would be an option for me, but with the guidance and support of Mr. Zehnder, I have gained self-confidence and know how to self-advocate. I am excited to attend college following High School graduation,and pursue my goal of becoming a Vet Tech.”

The Star Student Scholarship is awarded to a graduating student who has received Special Education Services. This scholarship is co-sponsored by ClaimAid Consulting Corporation and the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB). The scholarship is based on a number of requirements, including educational goals and academic accomplishments. ClaimAid is a leading provider of comprehensive eligibility and enrollment services and claims resolution for schools, hospitals, patients, individuals and their families. IASB is a private, nonprofit organization representing Iowa’s public school districts, education agencies and community colleges.


Nevada Senior Awarded $2,000 Special Education Teacher Scholarship 

Nevada,Iowa-Senior Erica Sporrer, Nevada Community Schools, received the 2020 Special Education Teacher Scholarship of Iowa in recognition for her academic achievements, extracurricular activities and educational goals.

With dedication to her studies, Erica has achieved academic excellence in her high school career. She was inducted into National Honor Society in 2019, and has received an academic letter for a GPA of 3.5 or higher both her Freshman and Sophomore year. In addition to these awards, she has also received Academic All Conference for Soccer and Basketball by the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union. In her free time, Erica has enjoyed a variety of sports, 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA), where she shows cattle and has completed several projects in wood-working, baking, painting and photography.

Sporrer plans to attend Iowa State to major in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Special Education. She credits her success to Nevada Community School’s Level 3 Special Education Teacher Tonya VanDam. Erica states “She has really guided me and taken me under her wing to learn. VanDam has made a huge impact on what I want to do with my future, as well as showing me the impact I could make on those I teach. Mrs. VanDam has done incredible things to help me find my way.”
